James Brown Passes
on: James Brown, the dynamic, pompadoured
"Godfather of Soul," whose rasping vocals and revolutionary rhythms made him
a giant of R&B and an inspiration for rap, funk and disco, died early
Christmas morning. He was 73.
Brown was hospitalized with pneumonia at Emory Crawford Long
Hospital on Sunday and died around 1:45 a.m. Monday, said his agent, Frank
Copsidas of Intrigue Music group. He was an Innovator and a Shaker of
his time. He was a singer who was loved by Rock and Roll, Soul (Which
became R & B) and a man who became somewhat self destructive in a couple of
previous years. He dabbled pretty heavily in drugs. But the
thing about James Brown he was an incredibly driven performer, and he was
very aware of being James Brown and the figure that he was. With an arrest a
couple of years ago, with the picture that went all over the world of a
deranged singer who was arrested with a mug photo that was crazy. He
was known as the hardest working man in show business and he was one of the
first people to introduce synchronized dancing on stage. There was that
amazing act of his where towards the end of the set, he'd fall to the floor
as if exhausted. Harris is known as a Radio 2 DJ and for TV's. They'd
put a cape around him, they'd be leading him off and suddenly he was back at
the front of the stage. He would go through this sequence at the end
of the set several times - but you believed it. You believed he would be
exhausted because he would put so much energy into his live performances. He
had been sent to prison two or three times during the course of his career.
Funeral plans for the Godfather of Soul, who died on Christmas Day of congestive heart failure at age 73, have been finalized. At the same time, as tributes from fans and fellow musicians around the world continue to pour in, Spike Lee has announced he'll direct a biopic based on Brown's life. In honor of his unforgettable debut at the historic Apollo Theater in Harlem, which culminated in his top-selling 1962 album, Live at the Apollo, Vol. 1, and marked his breakthrough on the pop charts, Brown's body will lie in state at the venue on Thursday from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. to give fans a chance to pay their last respects. The Reverend Al Sharpton, a close friend of the showman for over three decades, confirmed the funeral arrangements on Tuesday after consulting with Brown's children in Georgia. James Brown's widow said Monday she was denied access to
the Beech Island, S.C., home she shared with the singer and their 5-year-old
son, claiming the gate was padlocked at the request of Brown's lawyer and
accountant. Tomi Rae Brown, who was |
