Record Pools, another way to get your record heard..

By Douglas Santana-J.

For those artists that cry and moan that it is hard to be heard on the radio, I say what did you do to put your music out there? If you can put your music on the radio, be heard on MTV? Well, I want to talk about Record pools, they are the last bastion of people who want to get their music out. If they want to deal with the record companies, and no will listen to their music, and the websites are not moving them, try the record pools.  Some record pools have made artists overnight.  Record companies use them to see how much funding to put behind the artists.  It is great move for them, for they are the actual Djs that are playing the music.  It is their way of finding out if they got the right stuff.  Because real Djs are members of record pools, they get real feed-back.  So not only is the demand proven, so will the record sales.

Did you ever go to a club and hear a song long before it is released.  The Dj is trying out your song for the audience, some djs use their audience to help them rate the music.  It helps them to finish their surveys, but for some Djs, they might not have liked it but might have some ways to make it better and send in submissions to help the artist to fix it.  Some offer remixes to the artists for singles but for record companies, it is the proving ground.  For the Djs it is fun to get the record early and to hold it for release and build up the release.  Most artists use record pools to push their music, get it heard by the Djs that keep the dancers dancing, the records selling whether they are rock, dance, hip hop, reggae/ton, salsa, merenque-bachata, or other groups, when it goes thru the pools, it gives it a more worldwide appeal.  Record pools accept submissions from all artists and record companies.  If the artists go through the pools first, half of the work for the record companies is done, they have a viable product and just have to do release dates and renaming of song if needed.

Check out record pools, they have them in NYC, Chicago, Miami, Atlanta and Cali.  If you get the music to them, they distribute to their Djs.  Oh yeah, record pool - a interim between Djs and record companies, it is how the real Djs get their music. A record pool is a collection of Djs from different parts of music.  Record company gives the Record pool music and the Djs listen to the record or/and Cd and vote on whether it is hot or not, what they liked about it, and if it is something that their crowd wants to hear.  A record pool is divided up into three parts, Radio Djs-Television (VDJs) - (Who by the way must belong to two record pools, in some states one), Club Djs, and very busy Mobile Djs (have to have a proven track record - and can be thrown out of pool if they slow up).  Good thing is that even if the Djs do not like it, some might and still will play it.  As long as it has hit the record pool, it can be put on the radio.

So for all that think that they have a good song, check it out, send to the pools and see if it has the metal that is needed.  Record companies use them to check out the music, to see if they should put that advertising and how much should be put behind the songs, the albums. Good money spent for a viable product is a way to control the market.  For those artists that cry and moan that it is hard to be heard on the radio, I say what did you do to put your music out there?  If you can put your music on the radio, be heard on MTV, do it right.  Get it to the record pools, they speak to the record companies directly.  Remember each has a job to do, so try utilizing more than just giving it to myspace or complaining that radio stations do not play your stuff unless you pay them.  The radio stations get their records from the record pools and record companies.

Most stations will not take records that have not hit the pools, it is a better test of what should be played.  Especially since Djs are looking to break the newest music, and the one to have given the break to the next great group.  The station wants to break new groups that will get more listeners, better Djs, or to keep the best Djs in their stables.  Djs push what they like, not what they get paid to like.  They play stuff they like in the best venues and in their playlist.  So, get your music out there no matter how, but one more thought to use is a record pool.  Record pools are a resource that helps the Djs to get the music that needs to be played. That needs to be the new Number 1 on the charts, so why are you still reading get your music out.  Try emailing SureRecord@aol.com clubsosdj@aol.com clubsosdjs@aol.com  surenyrecordpool@aol.com  and for others check out other record pools near you.

Another resource is The Circle, as many know, I am always inviting people who want to get into the business to plus a A & R people to. The circle is the best information about the business for the business of Music.  So if you want to be a singer, record company exec, to get into the business at any point, even if you are a lawyer who is starting into the music business, come and check out the circle. The best and brightest in the business is there to tell you what you need to know and to pick their brains for tips.  How to get a lawyer, a agent, manager, what to do, when you should sign and so forth.  Not only artists go, so do people that want to break into the business, some that are established and professionals to help you.  To find out and to invite your friends to The Circle
