DJ Doug Fresh aka Dougie Fresco
Dj Doug Fresh (born 1964) is a DJ of the House and Freestyle era. He was known for Djing for many Events around the world. He has worked for many radio stations and one of the owners of Red Zone.
Doug became a member of OLAS (Organization of Latin American Students), and it became the biggest party groups in Queens. Doug met with Lyndon Uy, and Ultimate Force Djs. It Consisted of Dj Lyndon Uy, James Kinard Jr. (LJ), John John, and other college groups of Djs. The coalition was strong and bred great dances and plenty of fun. The coalition created a source for singers to perform as they grew as artists. They got to perform in public in front of groups and since a lot of the Djs went into radio like Doug. They got to edge into radio programs. Doug first worked with the street team with Vinnie Grillo for WBLS in NY. They worked a lot of concerts and events. They were the
sound men, and Doug branched out to work with Lyndon from Ultimate doing
clubs for OLAS and Doug did many clubs like the original Paradise Garage. He
worked later with the original WKTU and worked hard producing master mixes.
Doug had and has the gift for gab and is one of the most friendly people you
could meet, and on the short list of Djs around the city that always was
welcomed to Dj and perform. The crest of OLAS became the swan song for Doug and he left to go into the Navy. OLAS was known for being a party group that grew too large. It had grown to include colleges (St. Johns, QCC, Queens College, Stony Brook U., Brooklyn College, Columbia U., York College, and by that time almost 16 colleges in NYC 5 Boro's. The colleges were having a problem controlling the constant partying of its students and cracked down. One of the biggest complaints of the time was that students were missing classes, but not for fighting or problems. The other problem with OLAS was that OLAS was less than half members not being Hispanic. So they had to surrender to pressure from the school administrators and had to make changes. What was funny was that the changes took effect after Doug and others graduated. He joined the Navy and was soon a Journalist in Japan, the Philippines and all the WestPac. He was known for Djing in so many clubs in Japan like Circus Circus and so many others. He was known by many service members as the Dancing Dj. He was spinning with 3 turntables and was on the radio everywhere he went. He got to go to Korea, Philippines, Australia, China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia and was funny since he picked up languages easy. He had help with the languages but he was known for his smiling face and ability no matter how many people he talked to, making you feel as if he was talking to you alone. He also learned how to be a photographer also while in the Navy. It was part of his training as a Broadcast Journalist. He came back and forth to New York from Asia, bringing the troops the hottest and newest music out there and playing at 1018's in NY. He was a driving force behind bringing Freestyle, R&B, House and Latin to Asia. Promoting Freestyle and House in Japan and Westpac. He played everywhere in Japan, Philippines, Korea, Australia, Hong Kong, Indonesia and India, if he could Dj or dance, he was there involved in many chances to bring new music to new audiences. It was
amazing that he although great with a camera, was hardly in front of one,
except for a television show on Far East Network in Japan, Philippines, and
Korea he hardly had pictures of himself. He loved to be one taking the
pictures, and as a Journalist in the Navy, he got that chance. He felt
at home on stage, in front a camera, but hated still pictures of himself. He left the Navy in 1990 and started taking pictures and Djing
again. Red Zone was a monster, it was the first mixtape company of its time. I know you have heard many claims to being the first, but the real one was Red Zone. Started in the 80's, it was a monument to what became a good and bad revolution, but if nothing else, Red Zone was the Father of the Mixtape Era. Many tried to compete but everyone wanted to be on a Redzone Tape. Singers lined up to send the music to them to get their albums out and have the Red Zone to put them on a tape. Mixtapes were created in NYC, and it was Red Zone that started it, it was a marketing ploy to promote new singers, who gave their music and Djs that did remixes of that music so that other people could hear what they heard in clubs. Red Zone was not started to be a money thing, they just wanted to bring hot music, so that people would watch out for the hot new artists and want to know more. The company was known for some of the hottest remixes in the business. It had a magazine that would showcase the artists and when cds were really integrated, Red Zone dropped the Mixtape division. It was not part of the companies mission, the mission which was to showcase the new artists, needed to be done another way. Today: Doug took over and has had the Red Zone Music Magazine and Dj company producing many great Djs like Dj Tom Jeremy, and others. Dj Doug Fresh aka Dougie Fresco is still working with radio stations and clubs in New York, Vegas, DC, Japan, Philippines and Florida and not to mention his music blog magazine Red Zone. He is on Flagstaff staff of Red Zone Music Magazine. Doug is still playing for Clubs and Radio Stations, working hard, even though he broke his leg, foot and ankle, he is still hopping around to get Red Zone Moving to its next step. He is working to change Red Zone to its next of Evolution. |
