Buzz Editorial:

This week the Buzz Editorial is our Buzz Blast

Question of the Week:

Did a mentor or mentors have a positive affect on you when

you began your career in the business? If they did, please

tell us who they were, and what they did to help you on

your journey? Also, are mentors still important today? Are

you a mentor to someone? Do you need a mentor now?

"Elroy RC Smith is my mentor and without him, I’d be

working in a bank somewhere. He heard me on my college

radio station and hired me as a weekend jock. When I

worked under him at WILD-Boston, I was fortunate enough

to have him take an interest in me and entertain all questions,

stupid and otherwise whenever I would just run into

his office. From him I learned that it’s always all about the

audience, the importance of focusing on the core, how to be

a cheerleader for your brand and so much more. As I had

my first programming assignment (at WILD after Elroy left...

oh, I gotta thank him for that, too!), I was on the phone

constantly with him and he was always available, even as he

was setting up his own brand new station in Dallas. When I

got to BET, one of the first things I did was hire another

Elroy mentee, Kelly G. I don’t feel like I have any mentees,

but a lot of advisees. I always give people my e-mail

address and it’s amazing the folks who claim they want to

be mentored that just don’t follow up. Follow up is huge."—

Stephen Hill, BET

"I have been blessed to have several significant mentors

during my thirty plus year career in the broadcasting and

entertainment industries. The first was Van Jay who at the

time was a disc jockey at WRVR-FM, the leading jazz station

in New York (I’m talking straight ahead, not that smooth

mess)! Van produced an air check that lead me to my first

on air gig at WHUR in DC, where I was hired by Bob

‘Nighthawk’ Terry. This is the original Quiet Storm station in

the nation - a format created by Cathy Hughes - my best

friend, founder/chair of Radio One and my most enduring

mentor who helps to guide my personal and professional

growth in a most positive manner). Lastly, my beloved,

remarkable and brilliantly talented Kenny Gamble helped

me evolve into the woman I am still becoming today! From

these stellar individuals, I learned that it is imperative to

give back to others and the community at large. I take pride

in being a NABFEME mentor, president of the International

Association of African American Music Foundation (where we

organize seminars, symposiums for the public). I am currently

mentoring several young men and women who have

demonstrated promise as they travel on their paths. With my

company Influence Entertainment, I work as a coach who

specializes in career development for artists, athletes, media

personalities, and executives. We have a diverse past and

present client roster ranging from artist/actor/entrepreneur

Bow Wow to DKG/Reebok skateboarder Stevie Williams to

legal analyst Deborah Robinson (Nancy Grace, Court TV). It

is a blessing when you can impart knowledge, experiences

and caring onto folks willing to learn. You receive so much

when you give!"—Dyana Williams, International

Association of African American Music Foundation

"Mentors play a great role in the business. D Cherie was a

great mentor for me as she took me under her wing when I

started as an intern at WZFX Foxy 99. She was always about

conducting business and making sure I learned every aspect

of radio possible. Other great mentors for me include Mac

Edwards, OM of Beasley Fayetteville, Brian Douglas at

WJMH in Greensboro and the great Jerry Clifton, who helped

me grow so much as a programmer and leader. Mentors are

still important today since this business is based on the more

you know and great relationships. Besides everyone in this

business had someone help them get where they are and a

great mentor could be teaching someone who can be there

for them in the future as a boss... you never know."—Jeff

Anderson, WZFX-Fayetteville

"Mentors have and will continue to be a life force in our

industry. It is important that radio vets continue to evolve and

teach the sometimes ‘tactfully deprived’ generation of young

folks. I have been fortunate enough, over a 25 year career, to

have gotten guidance from radio legends: Bobby O’Jay, Steve

Crumbley, Melvin ‘A Cookin’" Jones, Broadway Joe Booker, CJ

Morgan, Irene Ware, George ‘Boogaloo’ Frazier, the late

Madhatter, Paul Dancer, Shelly Pope and others. These people

instilled patience, work ethic, humility, teamwork and more

work ethic into me and many of my peers. When I see the

success of Rick Party, Smokin’ & TC, KJ, Stan Bell, Myronda

Dexter and others, it’s obvious each one caught one and taught

one."—Mark Dylan, KOKY-Little Rock

"I think mentors are key today. In a society and industry

where nepotism still runs strong amongst our lighter

counterparts, we must make it our business to look out for

one another. I would say my mentors are/have been: My

mom, my grandmother, Sharon Heyward (my first boss in

this business), who remains a big sister to this day, Ornetta

Barber, Vivian Scott Chew, Jheryl Busby, A.D. Washington

(one of the wisest men that I’ll ever know), Karen Kennedy,

Pat Shields, a former supervisor, Randy Miller’ a couple of

my best friends, Cheryl Powell and Tanya H. Yopp and one

of my artists, Gladys Knight. These people have been

instrumental in guiding me and encouraging an incredible

work ethic. They are smart, wise and each one holds a

separate role in offering me advice. As a result, I give back

to those coming behind me."—Marilyn Batchelor,

Interscope/Geffen/A&M Records

"Mentors are greatly needed, more so in this industry, than

any other time. As I have heard radio all over the country,

there is so much lack of direction. I was so fortunate to have

a few that made such an imprint in my career and life. It

started with JJ Johnson at KDAY, as a young intern in high

school in Los Angeles, from there Ron Atkins, Jerry Clifton,

Tony Gray, Barry Mayo, Mary Catherine Sneed, and Jerry

Boulding played the biggest roles in my career; and I, in

turn mentored quite a few people myself, many of which are

doing quite well all over America. Today, Tony Gray and Ron

Atkins are still personal mentors in my life."—Jay

Michaels

October 27, 2005 • Page 9 of 10

"Mentors were and are still a very important part of my life

today. I am a very blessed man. I started out in my preteens

in this business and now at a young 50, it was these

wonderful mentors that came into my life and shared their

time and knowledge with a young and up-in-coming man in

this business. The most important thing on the other side of

the coin was I slowed down to listen to what they had to say.

Here are some of the mentors that I had and some are still

mentoring me today: Jheryl Busby, Miller London, Skip

Miller, Berry Gordy, Royce Fortune, Boo Frazier, Dizzy

Gillespie, Barry White, Clarence Avant, Step Johnson, Jack

Gipson, Jimmy Bee, Dave Clark, Keith Frye, J.J. Johnson,

Jack Paterson, Don Carter, Tony Anderson, Herb Alpert, Jerry

Moss, Gil Fresin, Hank Wylie, Brenda Romano, Kelvyn

Ventour, Marvin Robinson and many more. All these people

had a very positive effect on my life. I have never been a

know-it-all, I am still a dry sponge today, in the business of

radio and records. Ego guaranties you one thing for sure…

unemployment. Do your best to remember that you are

always working for somebody else, wether you are an

employee or you own your company. Because yesterday’s

score is no good in today’s game."—Jesus Garber, The

Jesus Garber Company

"When I first started in the business I didn’t have a mentor, I

had to learn the ropes on my own. In my second year in the

business I met one of the world’s greatest air personality’s

Russ Parr and he groomed me into a better air personality

by giving me tips on how to perfect my game to negotiating

a contract, and it was then he became my mentor. I think

mentors are very important especially when you have young

people in the game such as myself. It’s always good to have

that one person who knows the game in and out to help

others along the way! There aren’t a lot of people in this

business who will help others out and share information and

I admire the people that do. I commend people Like Russ

Parr and Lamonda Williams for stepping out and recognizing

good talent, not just with me but other talented people in

this arena, for having faith in them and helping them along

the way, because you don’t get that a lot anymore!"—T. T.
